Hé, klimax

The textual aspect of the work can be seen in the lobby of the theatre. hé, climax, the Greek word for ladder, has been given a metaphorical meaning. It summons up moments of emotion such as those that can be experienced in the theatre. With each shift into another language, the word for ladder is increasingly charged with new associations. It becomes a reverse Tower of Babel - the dream of a world in which languages understand each other. In this work, the light dims and brightens to a slow rythm - a refrence to theatre.

Playing with perspective

The work La Scala has been mounted on the roof of the theatre's 16 metre high tower. Placed diagonally and somewhat slanting, the 22 metre long light sculpture can be seen from a distance and from all sides. The ladder emphasises the tower's height even more, creating the impression that it connects heaven and earth.

Just as perspective is manipulated inside the theatre to create a (fictive) space, La Scala also juggles with perspective. The tubes meet at an exaggerated angle and are thicker at the upper side of the ladder, which emphasises the vanishing point.
