101 Names was designed for the Dapperbuurt in East Amsterdam. It comprises two oval canopies placed against the curved walls on either side of the railway bridge. The lower part of each awning shows a large expanse of blue sky in which the names are written in tiny letters. The work not only has a practical function (offering shelter from wind and rain) but symbolically creates an unusual portrait of the neighbourhood.101 Names represents the multicultural diversity of the community. A street sign tells that the names 'written in the sky' are those of the residents - Piet, Mohammed or Lida, who either live or work in the neighbourhood.
